I recently had the joy to create a complete Under the Piano session for Tyron, Vanessa and Inara. I wasn’t sure how it would go as Inara was just 4 months old. At the very beginning Inara was a little disturbed by the new and very present sound of a piano when experienced from directly beneath it and she did start to cry. But Vanessa soon calmed her down and Inara rested peacefully for the entire session. In deference to Inara’s young and fragile ears, I played everything less than a mezzo-forte volume. By the end she was sleeping peacefully. This is one of the gentle tracks I created and improvised for them.

It’s been a huge pleasure getting to know Monika. We’ve collaborated together, combining the power of her Reflect & Connect sessions with the magical transormation of Under the Piano. Monika has experienced Under the Piano a few times, so I was particularly interested to discover her thoughts about her own Under the Piano sessions. I’ve added a track of the music that was spontaneously created during her first Under the Piano session.

Transcription:

Craig: The purpose of this interview is just for you to share whatever you remember about your Under the Piano experience. So what do you remember about it?

Monika: What I remember from all the different sessions that I have experienced Under the Piano is that it transformed me in a very beautiful and deep way. I got connected more to my emotions, to my state of being, to creativity as well – I always tapped into something that I had no idea that was there for me – new ideas, new inspiration, new energy and every single time I came out of the sessions more grounded and connected to something essential within me. It’s hard to put a label on it but it might have been connection to myself and to something very basic and beautiful and truthful. It always felt really really good to be in those sessions, to go through the emotions, and also what I hear is that Craig has a beautiful talent of tapping into what is going in the person. He is very intuitive at connecting to the energy that the person has so I felt that he was often times picking up on my own state of being and sometimes as though he was reading my mind. I was thinking  “Oh I would love something more lively right now” and there it was – he was playing something more lively or – yah it was I felt connected to the music and to Craig in those sessions as well and it was a beautiful experience on top of it. So, I don’t know whether I made myself clear or not. I highly recommend these sessions. They are just transformative and very beautiful to experience and Craig creates a safe space for every person to show up – show up as who they are in the moment and it’s all good. You don’t have to be in a certain state of mind or being in order to go there. Just go and be – be transformed, be surprised by what might be coming up for you. So go and have fun when you go Under the Piano.

Craig: Thank you

Monika: Oh you’re welcome

Craig: That’s beautiful

Monika: Yah. I can’t wait for my next one.

Craig: I’m going to ask one more question which I may not use, but given it’s Valentine’s week – You’ve always done these sessions on your own …What opportunity do you see for Under the Piano as a celebration of Valentine’s Day for a couple?

Monika: What I can see is that it deepens and broadens the experience because each person individually will have their own experience with the music and then, as you know, between people there’s always a connection so I’m sure as a couple that they feel connected already and it will deepen their experience of their being partners. So I can see this actually exponentially grow the effect that it will have on the two of them as individuals and as a couple. Yah, I would love to experience this myself with my partner-to-be (laughter) – so stay tuned on that!

I recently had the pleasure of hearing Simeon Garriott’s thoughts and memories about his Under the Piano session.

Play this 2 minute interview to hear his thoughts.

Highlights of the interview include these thoughts:

  • It was really an amazing session. My wife is partially deaf, so she had her hand on the sound board the whole time.
  • It was one of the most different and amazing things that is really hard to describe.
  • We got a CD of the session and probably the most amazing thing – shortly after that I was going through a lot of stressful things in my business, and I’d come home, throw the CD on, pop my feet up on the coffee table and – better than any high blood pressure medicine I have ever taken.
  • Really amazing to be able to sit back there and listen to that and just disappear my mind for 20 minutes or half an hour and forget about the whole things and just relax.
  • My wife asked one question when we left, “How are you going to top this?”
  • Probably you want to book an Under the Piano session for your Valentine’s Day treat for your wife

Artwork by Mia Weinberg - Threading the paths of my synapses II

My passion for music comes from my experience of music and beauty making a big difference for people – whether it be providing relaxation and peace or seeing our common humanity, music has the power to pull us out of our current state of being and to transform our experience of ourselves and others instantly.

During World War I on Christmas Eve, it was a simple Christmas carol that brought enemies together as friends. The music brought their common humanity to the forefront and they set aside their differences, came together, and celebrated Christmas eve and Christmas day together as brothers rather than enemies. It then saved lives as they sheltered each other during subsequent bombings after Christmas Day. For the whole story read this blog post at https://craigaddy.com/2010/09/joyeux-noel-beauty-can-save-the-world/

My music is created with an intent. It is that beauty has the ability to transform and make a big difference that goes well beyond pleasure and entertainment. This season I offer you the opportunity to have some of that in your life, give it to people you love, and to make a difference for people who live with diabetes.

I’m offering my CDs for $20 each until December 31. $5 of every CD sold will go to support Mike & Shawn Bearman’s Team Diabetes fundraising campaign. Buy 5 or more CD’s for $15 each and $5 for each CD still goes to Team Diabetes. My goal is to raise a minimum of $1500 for Team Diabetes before January 1, 2013. About 300 CDs will cause that.

I recently had a delightful opportunity to share about Under the Piano at a Doula Meeting here in Vancouver. I offered an opportunity for them all to come for a complimentary session so they can get an idea of how wonderful an experience this is for expecting mothers. Several have jumped at the opportunity and I am having a great time sharing this with them. First up was Sommer and Jill. Here is what Jill had to say about her experience when she shared on facebook.

Tonight myself and another Vancouver area doula went and had a very lovely, relaxing, and unique experience.

We went “Under the Piano”. It was amazing. It really helped me to relax, shut off my brain, drift off, and really connect with my baby (who was moving around actively). The sound and vibrations of the music are really something else.

It’s great for pregnant moms as all you have to do is lie there among the soft cushions and drift off. It’s also great for couples, and could make for a unique night out that you would remember for a long time.

Here is the second piece I spontaneously created for them during the session.

Amicus Music Duo Live: Improvisations was not intended. It was created in the spirit of spontaneity and being present in the moment.

Living in the moment frees us from past regrets and fears of the future. The Arts are a powerful access to being in the moment, and the perfect moments for every musician and for every music lover are those when time dissolves.

None of the music in this recording was planned, none of it scored or rehearsed, none of it arranged. Except for two brief musical quotes, all that you will hear was spontaneously composed in the moment.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/64211603″ params=”auto_play=false&show_artwork=true&color=336666″ width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

We did plan some things…the keys in which we played and a variety of sources of inspiration. The track Bella Mia was inspired by Mia Weinberg’s beautiful artwork (as featured above in this post). Objet d’Art was inspired by a conversation with our audience about a pattern on the ceiling. East Meets West was inspired by the Madhavamanohari Raga (a South Indian scale).

Since 2011, we’ve recorded all our performances in Vancouver and Qualicum. These archives were meant for us, but since so many audience members have asked for them, the favourite improvisations are about to be available for you on Amicus Music Duo Live: Improvisations.

There are reminders that these are live…a little siren here, a mistuned piano there, a quiet cough here, a little squeak and rumble there, and varied acoustics.

Audience members have graciously shared their heartfelt views about the beauty, surprise and engagement in Amicus improvisations. We’ve chosen those recordings which best reflect these enthusiastic views.
